Hungary – Budapest, Eger and Tokaj – “The Wine of Kings”

Hungary is well known for its diversity of wine regions including Villany in the South, Lake Balaton and others.
Join us for our extraordinary tour to Eger and Tokaj, two of the most known wine regions of Hungary! Meet the winemakers, visit hundred year old cellars and enjoy some delicate food and wine pairing. Experience the diversity of the Furmint grape, taste late harvest wines, Szamorodni and Tokaji Aszú.
The Tokaj wine region is probably Hungary’s most famous wine region. The region gained its reputation as the producer of the "Wine of Kings” and the “King of Wines". Tokaji Aszú wine has been made for over 450 years.
You will also get the opportunity to taste and learn about Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood), Kékfrankos and other lovely cuvees of Eger while admiring the ambience. You will feel the atmosphere of the charming baroque city of Eger while enjoying the state-of-the-art wines.

Wednesday 6th July 2022, Budapest
Budapest is a beautiful city situated on the River Danube. There are many flight options from European cities to Budapest and the choice is left to you to suit your own convenience.
Make your own way to our Budapest Hotel the Zenit Budapest Palace which is wonderfully situated by the river Danube. After time for a rest we will meet in the evening to have a food and wine pairing dinner to introduce the wines of Hungary.
Thursday 7th July 2022, Eger
We depart in the morning to the Eger wine region.
Our first visit in Eger is to one of the most prestigious wineries, the Gal Tibor Winery, situated in the historical centre of Eger. We will have lunch and a wine tasting in the winebar owned by the Tibor Gal winery. After lunch we will have a guided sightseeing tour of the beautiful baroque city of Eger.
Our second visit is to the Saint Andrea Winery where we will meet the owner Mr.György Lőrincz. He and his wife Andrea and their children are responsible for the estate and make some lovely wines in a modern style. We will then check-in to our Eger hotel, probably the Korona Hotel, where the evening is free.
Friday 8th July 2022, Tokaj
We leave Eger to continue our journey to probably the most famous Hungarian Wine Region Tokaj, which has UNESCO World Heritage status. The region gained its reputation as the producer of the "Wine of Kings” and the “King of Wines". Tokaji Aszú wine has been made here for 450 years. It is the one of the world’s greatest natural sweet wines. Here we will learn about the diversity of the Furmint grape, Hungary’s most famous local variety.
We will be tasting dry Furmints besides the late harvest and Aszú wines. To start our journey to the botrytised sweet wine world, we will visit the amazing cellar system of Tokaj-Oremus, tasting wines in their old underground cellar.
Lunch will be at a cosy local restaurant of a wine estate in the Mad village area. We will then be visiting a much smaller, family-run cellar and taste wines with the owner/winemaker of either Kikelet Cellars or the Arvay Family winery.
We will then check in to our Tokaj hotel, probably the Botrytis Hotel where the evening is free.
Saturday 9th July 2022, Tokaj
To kick off the day, we visit a small-scale local cheese farmer and taste cheese in Mad village, in the heart of the region.
We will then meet our local guide at Barta Winery for lunch and a tasting. Besides tasting wines, we will learn about the local grapes, winemaking traditions and the diversity of soils in the region.
We will need to go underground for our second tasting of the day, at Holdvolgy Cellars where some treasures await us in a six hundred year old cellar labyrinth.
We return to the Botrytis Hotel-and the day rounds of with an exclusive wine-paired dinner with our expert local Tokaj guide.
Sunday 10th July 2022, Departure
After breakfast we leave our hotel for the transfer back to Budapest Airport.
£1375.00 (Guide price) per person sharing a twin or double-bedded room (excluding flights).
