Rioja, one of the world’s most famous wine regions, has been seducing wine lovers for centuries with its delicious, soft, silky, spicy wines. Tucked away in the North-East corner of Spain on the edge of the Basque country this fascinating region is a treasure trove – great wines, gourmet food, pretty scenery and charming hill top towns. Despite its prestige as Spain’s oldest and most loved wine region, it is also one of Spain’s most innovative regions. Our tour will include visits to some of the best classical Rioja producers as well as some bodegas working in the more modern style.
During this tour, we will be staying in an elegant 4-star hotel in the bustling town of Logroño for 3 nights, and during our 4 days will be visiting a variety of wineries to show you the exciting range of styles and trends that the region now offers.
Our short-list of wineries includes Campo Viejo, Viña Real and Contino, Dinastia Vivanco, Lopez de Heredia, Muga, Roda, Tobelos, Urbina and Artuke
The tour will start and finish at Bilbao International Airport, the nearest to the Rioja region. We have chosen the timings to connect with direct flights from and to the UK operated by British Airways and Vueling as follows:-
- Thursday16th May – British Airways departing Gatwick at 06h.40 and arriving Bilbao at 09h.40
- Sunday 19th May – Vueling departing Bilbao at 18h.25 and arriving at Gatwick at 19h.10
Thursday 16th May
Assemble at Bilbao Airport for a 10h.30 departure by executive coach for the Rioja region. The journey takes us through the mountains of the Sierra Cantabria and down the valley of the river Ebro to the town of Briones.
Our first visit of the tour is to the great modern bodega of Dinastia Vivanco, where we will have a tour of the winery and a tasting before lunch (cost included). After lunch there will be time to visit their amazing wine museum.
We then drive on to Logrono and check in to a 4-star hotel in the centre of the town, our base for the next three nights.
After a welcome drink together, the rest of your evening is free. Why not join the locals in the tapas bars in the narrow streets of the old town, just five minutes walk from the door of the hotel?
Friday 17th May
After a leisurely breakfast, we spend the morning at two contrasting bodegas on the outskirts of Logrono, visiting their cellars and tasting a selection of their wines.
After lunch in a nearby restaurant (cost included), we drive to Laguardia, where you will have free time to soak up the atmosphere of this beautifully-preserved Basque hill-top town.
On our way back to Logrono, our final visit of the day will be to a small family producer, for a tasting of their attractive range of wines.
Your evening will be free. Another night in the tapas bars or something more sedate? There are a plenty of good restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. We will provide you with a list of our favourites.
Saturday 18th May
After another leisurely breakfast, we make the short journey north to Haro and visit the bodega of one of the top producers of traditional-style Rioja in the historic ‘Railway Quarter’ of the town for a tour and a tasting.
After lunch in the town (cost included), we will visit the architecturally stunning modern bodega of another of Rioja’s big-name producers.
We return to Logrono in the early evening. Time for a bit of shopping before a final round of the tapas bars?
Sunday 19th May
After breakfast, we check out of our hotel and travel north to the west of the Rioja Alta region and the bodega of one of our favourite family producers, where we will have a walk in the vineyards followed by a tasting.
After lunch, in a nearby restaurant (cost included), our coach will take us back to Bilbao and the airport, where the tour will end.
Changes to the itinerary: Please note that, on rare occasions, we may have to make changes to the itinerary for reasons beyond our control.
