Wine break in Galicia, Spain

Wine Tour in Galicia 5th to 9th June 2018

This is a 5 day/4 night tour of the cooler, Celtic northwestern corner of the Iberian Peninsula, or ‘Green Spain’, as it is often called. Dramatic scenery with a gentle climate, a relaxed life-style, wonderful food, especially for those who love fish and seafood, crisp and complex white wines from Albariño , Godello and Treixadura and juicy reds from Mencia, Galicia has much to offer.

We will visit 4 of its wine regions – Rias Baixas (including the sub-regions of Val do Salnes on the coast and Condado de Tea inland), Ribeiro, Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras. We will also visit a bodega in the Bierzo region (actually part of the Leon province) and the small town of Melgaço in northern Portugal, so we can taste the wines of Quinta Soalheiro – widely regarded as the best makers of Alvarinho in the Vinho Verde region.

The tour will start and finish at Porto airport, which offers a better selection of direct flights from the U.K. than the Galician airports and is only 1 hour’s drive away by motorway. Accommodation will be in Paradores, historic buildings converted into four-star hotels. Nights 1 and 4 will be in the Parador de Tui, a converted country house, and nights 2 and 3 in the Parador de Monforte, a restored 17th century monastery.

    Outline itinerary

    Day 1 – Tuesday 5th June
    Assemble at Porto airport for a 12h.30 departure in a small, air-conditioned, luxury coach for O Rosal just over the border in Spain. After lunch in O Rosal (included), we visit one of the Galicia’s finest producers of wine from the Albariño grape, Bodegas Terras Gauda (D.O. Rias Baixas O Rosal) for a vineyard visit and tasting. We then drive to the nearby Parador de Tui, for the night. You evening is free. There is a restaurant in the Parador and several others within walking distance or a short taxi ride away in the town of Tui itself.

    Day 2 – Wednesday 6th June
    After a leisurely breakfast, we check out of the Parador and board our coach for the drive to As Neves. Our first visit of the day is to Bodega Vina Nora (D.O Rias Baixas Condade de Tea), where we have a short vineyard tour and a tasting. We then drive on to Casal de Arman, where we stop for lunch (included). After lunch, we have a short drive to Leiro for our second visit of the day, Bodegas Coto de Gomariz (D.O. Ribeiro), where we have a tasting of their excellent whites and reds on the balcony of the winery, overlooking the vineyards. Well refreshed, we re-board the coach for the journey to the Parador in Monforte de Lemnos. Your evening is free. There is a good restaurant in the Parador itself and other options near by and in the old town.

    Day 3 – Thursday 7th June
    After an early breakfast, we board our coach for the journey to A Rua (D.O. Valdeorras) and a visit with Rafael Palacios of Bodegas Palacios in D.O.Valdeorras. Rafa is regarded as one of the very best white wine makers in Spain and is a wonderful host. We will then head to Cacabelos for lunch at Moncloa de San Lazaro (included). After lunch we drive to nearby Ponferrada and Bodegas Estefania –Tilenus (D.O Bierzo), where we have a winery visit and tasting of some very lovely Mencia . It’s then back to the Parador de Monforte, where again, your evening is free.

    Day 4 Friday 8th June
    After a leisurely breakfast, we check out of the Parador and board our coach for the short journey to Adega Algueira (D.O. Ribeira Sacra) one of the founding bodegas of this small but exquisitely beautiful region. After a tasting at the bodega, we take a leisurely boat trip along the River Sil and then have lunch at O Castelo Restaurant (included) with the Bodega’s wines. In the late afternoon, we return to the Parador de Tui where, again, your evening is free.

    Day 5 – Saturday 9th June
    After another leisurely breakfast, we check out of the Parador and board our coach for the short journey to Melgaco, just across the river Minho in Portugal, and Quinto do Soalheiro (D.O. Vinho Verde). After a brief visit to the vineyards and winery, we have a tasting and then lunch in a nearby restaurant (included). It’s then back on the coach for the journey down the motorway to Porto airport, where the tour ends.
