Wine Break in Avignon & The Southern Rhône

A late Autumn wine holiday in Avignon & The Southern Rhône

Tuesday 19th to Saturday 23rd October 2021

For our late autumn tour of the vineyards of the Southern Rhône, we are making our base the historic city of Avignon.  This was home to the French Popes of the fourteenth century, whose summer residence, a short distance to the north, gave its name to the region’s most celebrated wine – Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Today, it’s a beautiful, well-preserved city.  It has three UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Cathedral, the Papal Place and what remains of the famous bridge across the river Rhône (yes, that one).  Our hotel, the Four star, Hotel Mercure, is right in the centre of the city.  A good selection of bars, restaurants and shops and the main tourist attractions are all a short walk away.

The weather in the south of France at the end of October is generally fine – sunny and warm with temperatures between 14˚ and 20˚ –  perfect for tastings and exploring vineyards.

Our nine winery visits will be focused on high-quality, smaller producers across the region’s best appellations.  Each day, we will explore a different part of the region.
