El Andaluz – Sherry, Wine and Moorish Enchantment

Tuesday April 28th to Sunday May 3rd 2020

Our 5-night / 6-day tour of Spain’s exquisitely beautiful south western corner will begin with a 3-night stay in Jerez itself, followed by 2 nights in Ronda, high in the Sierra above the coast behind Malaga. From the perspectives of art, history and the Moorish legacy, Andalucia offers extraordinary richness – no other part of Europe better reflects the beauty and sophistication of Moorish culture.

For the Wine lover, this is of course the heart of Sherry, but no longer limited just to that. Over the last decade, the expansion and development of great quality wine making in the Sierras above Cadiz and Malaga has been remarkable.  For the last 2 nights we will be based in the ancient hilltop town of Ronda, allowing us to visit 3 of the best new bodegas in the region.

Jerez and Ronda are both wonderful bases for our tour with much to see and do and so our itinerary will include a free afternoon in each city allowing you to explore them.

Late afternoon and evenings in Spain are the most social time, with the locals out for an evening paseo, while shops, bars and restaurants open late.

Our tour will start from Jerez airport on Tuesday April 28th and finish at Malaga airport on Sunday May 3rd.  Anyone wishing to stay on in Malaga itself can be dropped there. Easyjet flights to Jerez from Gatwick leave at 10.40, getting us into our hotel in the heart of Jerez by about 4pm.

    Outline itinerary

    The proposed itinerary is as follows:

    Day 1 – Tuesday April 28th

    On arrival at Jerez Airport, we transfer to our hotel in the heart of the city – our base for the first 3 nights of the tour.
    In the evening, we meet for a welcome dinner and tasting (included) with Gonzales Byass.

    Day 2 – Wednesday April 29th

    After a leisurely breakfast our coach takes us down to the coastal town of Chipiona to visit Cesar Florido   – a small family owned bodega with a good range of dry Sherries and the best Moscatel to be had in the region.
    We have lunch in Chipiona (included) before heading back to Jerez for an afternoon visit to Bodegas Fernando de Castilla.

    Day 3 – Thursday April 30th

    In the morning, we walk to Bodegas Lustau for a visit and tasting followed by a visit to Emilio Hidalgo.
    We have a late lunch in Jerez.
    Your afternoon and evening are free to allow time to explore the city.

    Day 4 – Friday May 1st

    We check out of our hotel and board our coach for the journey to Ronda.
    We stop at Huerta de Albala – a wine bodega near Arcos de la Frontera – for a visit and tasting followed by lunch (included) in the little town of Grazalema in the middle of the Sierra National Park.
    After lunch, we visit Bodegas Schatz before continuing our journey to Ronda.
    After checking in to our hotel, your evening is free.

    Ronda is an extraordinary little town, astride a gorge, packed with wonderful walks and striking architecture and of course fantastic views.  There are plenty of great little bars and restaurants to eat in – an evening drink on the balcony of the Parador bar is recommended.  Ronda’s history includes a Roman legacy in the shape of a ruined theatre, Moorish architecture from its many centuries as gateway fortress in El Andaluz and a ‘new’ bridge dating from the 18th century which united the town – previously separated by the gorge.

    Day 5 – Saturday May 2nd

    After a leisurely breakfast, we leave for a visit to Bodegas Cortijo de Los Aguilares, the leading winery in this area and a member of Pagos de Espana for a visit to their vineyards and winery followed by a comprehensive tasting with some pre–lunch tapas. We return to Ronda for lunch (included).
    Your afternoon and evening are free.

     Day 6 – Sunday May 3rd

    We check out of our hotel and visit another winery in Ronda for a tasting and then drive down to Malaga for lunch and a tasting (included) at Restaurant Pimpi in the heart of the old accompanied by a tasting of the local Malaga Virgen wines.
    After lunch, our coach takes us to Malaga airport for 4pm, where the tour ends.

    Tour cost

    £1150 per person sharing a twin or double-bedded room.

    A supplement of £250 will be payable for single occupancy of a double room, but there are normally plenty of congenial people looking for someone to share with, if you should so wish.
