Wine courses for all levels

Wine tastings, workshops and courses to fill your Autumn evenings

As the leaves turn gold, the evenings grow darker and your glorious holiday in the sun seems a lifetime ago, we think it’s the perfect time to let you know about our Autumn line up of wine tastings, courses and workshops in London. From September to December, we will be covering the wines of Alsace, Greece, the cool Celtic North west of Spain, Italy, France and the Balkans.

Our tastings, courses and workshops are very friendly and open to anyone who wants to learn more about wine or simply try something different. For the full list and booking details, please see our Wine Education Service website.

Thursday 15th September (Holborn) – The Wines of Greece – £35

The Greek wine industry is undergoing a renaissance. As in other Southern European countries, the re-planting of vineyards and investment in stainless steel and refrigeration has enabled the production of modern wines with international appeal. We will taste a selection of fine white and red wines made from traditional as well as international grape varieties

Tutor – Pippa Hayward with Sandy Leckie

Thursday 22nd September (South Kensington) – It’s All Happening in Alsace – £40

It’s all happening in Alsace. A new generation of young, passionate and talented vignerons and vigneronnes is challenging tradition and pushing boundaries. Bland, off-dry whites are being replaced by pure, crisp, fruit and terroir-expressive wines and simple, deep-rosés by reds of almost Burgundian style and quality. Oak is being used increasingly for special cuvées. More and more domaines are being converted to organic and biodynamic production. And if all of that were not enough, the Appellation system is being modified to include a 1er cru level between “Alsace” tout court and “Alsace Grand Cru”. We will be tasting wines from four of the ‘rising stars’ and four old favourites.

Tutor – Pippa Hayward with Sandy Leckie.

Monday 26th September (Holborn) – Spain – The Cool Celtic North-West – £35

A tasting of four peachy whites from Rias Baixas and four distinctive reds from the neighbouring districts of Ribeira, Ribera Sacra and Valdeorras. And to complete your enjoyment, a selection of cold tapas.

Tutor – Pippa Hayward with Sandy Leckie.

Thursday 6th October (Holborn) – Italy – Sicily & Sardinia – £35

The Italian islands of Sicily and Sardinia have a rich tradition of wine making. We will taste a selection of fragrant whites from grape varieties such as Catarrato, Grillo, Inzolia, Malvasia and Vermentino and robust reds from Cannonau, Carignano and Nero d’Avola. We will end the tasting with a classic Marsala.

Tutor – Vivienne Franks with Malcolm Franks.

Monday 10th October (Holborn) – Mature German Riesling – £40

The tastings we organised in 2013 and 2014 were so popular that whenever the opportunity arises to invest in more old vintages, we jump at it. Rieslings in a variety of styles from the Mosel and the Nahe Valleys and vintages back to 1986.

Tutor – Vivienne Franks with Malcolm Franks.

Thursday 20th October (South Kensington) – Bordeaux – 10 Years On – £45

TUTORS

Our tutors are at the top of their profession. All are qualified to WSET Diploma level and are members of the UK Association of Wine Educators, the professional body for those who make their living in whole or in part from teaching about wine. Many are also members of the elite Circle of Wine Writers.

All travel widely to keep their wine knowledge up to date.

Skilled communicators, they know how to make wine tasting and learning about wine fun.

STYLE OF TASTINGS

Our tastings are seated and relaxed and informal in style. Unless otherwise indicated, 8 wines will be tasted.

The tutor will give some background information and then simply introduce each wine and encourage discussion. A tasting sheet and, where appropriate, maps will be provided but not detailed notes.

TASTING GLASSES

You will need to bring your own wine glasses. If you really want to sharpen your taste buds, a set of the International Standards Organisation (ISO) glasses used by the professionals is recommended (the tutors will have boxed sets of six crystal ISO tasting glasses on sale at £15).
